I would still argue that the signifiers could apply as well to a strong, liberated, well-travelled, Bohemian, counter-cultural opera singer who digs guys; she need not have been connected to the lesbian underground, as it looks to me like those signifiers were just as tied to a certain male-inclusive sensual lifestyle. I admit that's just an impression, though.
