Now that's interesting... the publication in which that essay was printed is The Serpentine Muse, which is the journal of the Adventuresses of Sherlock Holmes, a women-run organisation: "ASH achieved early notoriety when its members picketed the Annual Dinner of the Baker Street Irregulars in protest of the BSI policy of excluding women."

I wonder if anyone here on q_h knows any of the ASH folks?
