In another story, Holmes adopts a 14 year old "telegraph boy" as his valet, a reference that Conan Doyle's readers no doubt would have associated with the recent Cleveland Street Affair, when "telegraph boys" serviced aristocratic patrons and subsequently gave incriminating testimony.


Er, do you happen to have any idea to what story this could possibly be referring? I don't recall Holmes having a valet at any point. Just in case, I did a quick search of my electronic copies of the canon for every instance of the word "telegraph," and didn't find a single reference to a telegraph boy, much less to Holmes adopting one. The author can't possibly mean Wiggins, can he?
